MTN Group, Africa’s largest mobile network operator, led by Zimbabwean executive Ralph Mupita, has forged a strategic alliance with Synamedia, a global leader in video software solutions, to launch a cutting-edge streaming platform catering to mobile and fixed broadband users across Africa. This marks a significant step in transforming digital entertainment access and offers a tailored experience for Africa’s diverse and rapidly evolving audience base.

The new platform will integrate Synamedia’s advanced cloud-based technologies, enabling both linear television and on-demand video services. By employing multiple monetization strategies, the platform will be adaptable to the unique demands of different African markets. Content will be curated and localized to reflect regional languages, cultural preferences, and viewing habits, ensuring maximum relevance and engagement across the continent.

Advanced technology drives Africa’s streaming future

Synamedia’s robust technology will be pivotal in delivering seamless content management, along with personalized viewing recommendations. With the company’s expertise in scalable cloud integration, the platform is designed for reliability and growth, positioning MTN to capture a broad audience while providing exceptional service continuity.

Selorm Adadevoh, MTN Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the transformative potential of the partnership, stating, “This collaboration presents a unique opportunity to revolutionize video consumption in Africa by providing high-quality, accessible content tailored to local preferences. By leveraging innovative technology and deep customer insights, we are enhancing the entertainment experience and advancing digital inclusion across the continent.”

A game-changer for African entertainment

Paul Segre, CEO of Synamedia, added, “MTN’s leadership in the African telecom sector will allow us to bring cutting-edge linear TV and on-demand video to millions of smartphone owners across the continent. With our integrated, cloud-based technology, we can quickly scale these services to create a groundbreaking entertainment offering that drives new revenue streams for MTN.”

This partnership reflects both companies' commitment to advancing digital inclusion and expanding access to premium content across Africa. By integrating advanced technology with a localized approach, MTN and Synamedia are poised to redefine Africa’s digital entertainment landscape, providing viewers with tailored content and contributing to the continent’s digital ecosystem.

MTN's resilience amid economic challenges

Under Ralph Mupita, MTN Group continues to solidify its position as a dominant player in Africa’s telecommunications sector, despite economic challenges, including the devaluation of the Nigerian naira. However, the company’s resilience has been evident in its strategic moves, such as the sale of MTN Guinea-Conakry to the State of Guinea, a key step in the group’s long-term portfolio optimization strategy.

In 2024, MTN reported a loss of R11.2 billion ($576.57 million), contrasting sharply with the R4.02 billion ($206.95 million) profit in 2023. The company attributed the financial setback to the Nigerian naira’s devaluation, along with challenges in Afghanistan and impairments linked to the ongoing Sudan conflict. Despite these hurdles, MTN’s strategic realignments and technology-driven ventures, such as the Synamedia partnership, reinforce its long-term growth vision and commitment to Africa's digital future.
