Two years after acquiring Nigerian telecoms executive Funke Opeke’s MainOne in a $320-million deal, Equinix, a global digital infrastructure company led by U.S. businessman Charles Meyers, has launched a $1 billion cloud computing data center in Saudi Arabia.
The announcement was made at the LEAP 2025 tech conference in Riyadh, which brought together participants from 18 countries. The event showcased emerging technologies, AI advancements, and investment opportunities, alongside cultural and entertainment activities.
During the conference, six investment funds unveiled plans to inject $695 million into startups, AI-driven solutions, and gaming innovations. On the first day alone, Saudi and global tech companies announced a combined investment of $14.85 billion.
Equinix grows global data presence
With its new data center in Riyadh, Equinix now operates more than 240 facilities across 66 cities in 27 countries. The expansion strengthens its role in supporting the region’s fast-growing digital economy, underscoring its commitment to advancing global digital infrastructure.
This latest development follows Equinix’s 2022 acquisition of MainOne, a leading West African data center and connectivity provider. The deal was part of Equinix’s broader plan to expand its footprint in Africa and reinforce its position as a major player in carrier-neutral digital infrastructure. Today, the company serves over 10,000 businesses, including more than half of the Fortune 500.
MainOne founder, Opeke, steps down
In November 2024, Funke Opeke, MainOne’s founder and longtime CEO, stepped down after 14 years of leadership. Her departure marked the completion of MainOne’s transition into Equinix, a milestone moment for the company.
Under Opeke’s leadership, MainOne transformed West Africa’s digital landscape, delivering critical internet infrastructure across the region. Her efforts positioned the company as a cornerstone of Africa’s growing tech ecosystem, paving the way for its integration into Equinix’s global network.
As part of its efforts to enhance operations and expand service offerings, Equinix has introduced “MainOne, Solutions by Equinix.” This initiative blends MainOne’s regional expertise with Equinix’s global infrastructure, aiming to accelerate Africa’s digital transformation and meet the region’s increasing demand for data-driven solutions.
