Edha Nahdi, a prominent Tanzanian businessman, is shaping the future of East Africa’s business landscape as the leader of Amsons Group, a family-run conglomerate with interests across multiple key industries in the region.

From his roots in Tanzania, Nahdi’s entrepreneurial journey began at 19, when he founded Camel Oil Tanzania in 2006. Specializing in the import and distribution of petroleum products, his keen business sense quickly became apparent, positioning him for bigger opportunities.

Today, as one of East Africa's most influential entrepreneurs, Nahdi’s vision and determination have driven the growth of Amsons Group, a powerhouse with a diverse portfolio spanning several vital industries.

Resilience and visionary leadership

As demand for diversified services in Tanzania grew, Nahdi’s leadership guided Amsons Group into new sectors, expanding its portfolio to include cement manufacturing, inland container depots, real estate, and bulk grain storage. This move solidified Amsons Group’s position as a cornerstone of Tanzania’s economy.

The cement operations, in particular, marked a turning point. The acquisition of Mbeya Cement boosted the Group’s production capacity to 6,000MT/day. In addition, Nahdi's strategic investment in a 500MT/day wheat milling plant, a reliable transportation fleet, and ICDs highlighted his drive to create a self-sufficient and interconnected regional business ecosystem.

Nahdi’s success stemmed from a combination of resilience and foresight. He skillfully navigated the complexities of cross-border trade, established sustainable business practices, and built strong partnerships, earning the respect and backing of key leaders like Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu and Kenyan President William Ruto.

Nahdi’s crowning moment in business

The crowning achievement of Nahdi’s business journey is Amsons Group’s landmark acquisition of Bamburi Cement, Kenya’s largest cement producer. In December 2024, Amsons Industries Ltd acquired 212.73 million shares for Ksh13.83 billion ($94.1 million), following an earlier purchase of 137.06 million shares for Ksh22.74 billion ($156.1 million).

The deal, finalized after rival Savannah Cement withdrew its bid amid fraud allegations, saw Amsons pay Ksh65 ($0.502) per share—demonstrating confidence in Kenya’s construction industry and solidifying its dominance in the sector. The transaction aligns with the Group’s sustainability goals, advancing renewable energy and eco-friendly manufacturing practices while reinforcing its commitment to innovation.

Leadership beyond business

Under Nahdi's leadership, Amsons Group has transformed from its beginnings in bulk oil and petroleum under the Camel Oil Tanzania brand into a powerhouse across East Africa’s manufacturing, transport, and fuel sectors.

Nahdi’s rise from a young entrepreneur to the leader of a thriving business empire highlights his resilience and innovative thinking. With Amsons Group’s recent acquisition of Bamburi Cement, Nahdi is positioning the company to make a substantial mark on the cement and construction industries, driving growth across East Africa for years to come.

From humble beginnings in oil imports to steering a billion-dollar conglomerate, Nahdi’s journey is a testament to the power of vision, hard work, and perseverance. His ventures have not only created significant wealth but have also provided jobs, improved communities, and promoted sustainable practices, earning him recognition as a forward-thinking entrepreneur and a socially responsible leader.
