Key Points
- Hassan Allam Utilities, Masdar, and Infinity Power have signed agreements with Egypt's EETC to develop 1,200MW of solar energy projects in Wahat and Benban.
- The Benban project includes a cutting-edge 300MW solar facility with a 720MWh battery energy storage system to enhance energy efficiency.
- These projects are part of a broader 11,000MW renewable energy plan, positioning Egypt as a leader in clean energy investments in the region.
Hassan Allam Utilities, Masdar (Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company), and Infinity Power have finalized two power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) for solar energy projects totaling 1,200 megawatts. This collaboration, endorsed by Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and UAE Minister Sultan Al-Jaber, marks a significant step in Egypt’s clean energy expansion.
Solar initiatives to reshape Egypt’s energy mix
The agreements cover two major solar projects. The first, in Wahat, will generate 900 megawatts of capacity, while the second, in Benban, will produce 300 megawatts, including a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 720 megawatt-hours. These initiatives are designed to significantly cut carbon emissions while bolstering Egypt’s renewable energy infrastructure.
Hassan Allam Utilities emphasized the projects’ alignment with Egypt’s sustainability goals, highlighting their contribution to diversifying the nation’s energy mix and advancing its renewable energy targets. The partnership forms part of a larger alliance to deliver 11,000 megawatts of renewable capacity across Egypt.
Strengthening a foundation for green energy leadership
These solar projects build on previous commitments, such as the consortium’s agreement with the Egyptian government in May to develop a 10,000-megawatt onshore wind farm in West Sohag. That project, which secured 3,025 square kilometers of land, reflects Egypt’s ambitions to lead the Middle East and North Africa in renewable energy innovation.
Collaborations like these underscore the transformative power of partnerships in realizing large-scale clean energy initiatives. By leveraging technology and resources, Egypt continues to set a benchmark for sustainable development in the region, paving the way for future green energy advancements.
