The municipality confirmed that Southern Sun was the sole bidder for these coveted properties, marking a significant investment of R1 billion ($58.3 million) aimed at revitalizing the hotels.

At a press event at the Elangeni Hotel, eThekwini officials emphasized the importance of this redevelopment, which underscores the municipality's commitment to rejuvenating the beachfront area. This strategic partnership with Southern Sun is expected to enhance the overall hospitality landscape while preserving the area's historical significance.

Comprehensive revitalization plan

The redevelopment initiative includes extensive renovations not only for the Elangeni and Maharani hotels but also for other Southern Sun-managed properties nearby. Plans feature major upgrades to the Garden Court South Beach and The Edward hotels, alongside a R5-million ($292,100) fund dedicated to restoring the historically significant Sunken Gardens park.

This opportunity for lease arose after the municipality decided to market the properties, as Southern Sun's leases are set to expire next year. Following a transparent tender process aligned with city procurement regulations, public interest surged as concerns grew regarding the future of Durban's iconic Golden Mile.

Economic impact and legacy

Durban Mayor Cyril Xaba lauded the municipality's effective management of the redevelopment process, highlighting its potential to stimulate the local economy and create jobs. “Southern Sun’s commitment to transformation and inclusive economic development is clear,” he stated. Southern Sun Group CEO Marcel von Aulock echoed these sentiments, noting the vital role these properties play in the vibrancy of Durban's beachfront.
