Dahabshiil Group, a multinational conglomerate led by Somali multimillionaire businessman Abdirashid Duale, has announced a strategic partnership with M-PESA Safaricom-Ethiopia, a subsidiary of Kenya’s Safaricom.

This partnership, aimed at simplifying and accelerating money transfers for the Ethiopian diaspora, underscores Dahabshiil and Safaricom Ethiopia’s commitment to innovation and customer service excellence, aiming to drive economic growth and financial empowerment in Ethiopia.

Streamlined remittance services and enhanced financial accessibility

The agreement, signed in Addis Ababa, allows Ethiopians abroad to send money directly to M-PESA mobile wallets across Ethiopia. This collaboration promises to reduce the complexities previously associated with international remittances, enhancing both speed and security.

“We are excited to collaborate with Safaricom’s M-PESA in Ethiopia,” said Dahabshiil in a statement. “This partnership offers our diaspora customers a seamless channel to support their families. It reinforces our commitment to financial inclusion in Ethiopia.”

What executives are saying about the strategic partnership

Musse Mohamed, Dahabshiil’s Ethiopia country representative, emphasized the partnership’s benefits for Ethiopians overseas. “Teaming up with M-PESA Safaricom allows us to expand our reach and provide reliable financial services,” he noted. “Together, we aim to make it safer and easier for Ethiopians abroad to send money home.”

Anthony Kangethe, Acting Chief Digital Financial Services Officer at M-PESA Safaricom, highlighted the shared vision of enhancing financial inclusion in Ethiopia. “Partnering with Dahabshiil, a leader in international money transfers, aligns with our goal of fostering economic development,” he stated. “This new service will empower Ethiopians with a secure and convenient means to manage their finances.”
